In the U.S. the coming of spring also signifies the arrival of
tax time. Personally, I delay this task as long as humanly
possible. After not sleeping for three days, I frantically run
to the post office to get that all important date stamped on
the tax envelope. I swear every year that the next time things
will be different. In order to try and make that goal a
reality, I am using the Internet to get a jump start on my
taxes this year. So, if you can relate to my relationship with
taxation, I hope this article will help you as well. So grab
your coffee, poise your hand over your mouse and visit sites
that may actually help you file on time and possibly figure out
how to keep more of your hard-earned money.
A Surprising Twist from the IRS
The IRS is now publishing an on-line magazine called the
Digital Daily. To be perfectly honest, I found that the
combination of lots of graphics and programming features made
for a pretty homepage, but a long download time. However, I
still gained access to information a lot faster than when I've
called and been left on hold for half an hour or transferred to
5 or 6 different people without an answer to my question.
The IRS Tax Info For You page is very helpful for individuals
doing their own taxes. The Electronic Services section has
tells you how to file using your computer. Many of the sites
listed below also provide direct links to IRS pages that deal
with specific tax questions.
Making Your Taxes Compute
To get the low-down on electronic filing, visit Net Taxes. This
extraordinarily comprehensive guide features information on all
aspects of taxes, from the best tax software to how to use your
computer if your still more comfortable with a pencil. There
are links to outside resources on every topic covered. The
Financially Wired Guide has some nice information for
consideration and actually rates a few sites in terms of tax
help.
Net Tax claims to be "The most powerful free on-line U.S. tax
calculation program and 1040 preparation aid on the Web!" I did
find that it was pretty user-friendly and I liked the
hyper-links within the form that lead directly to IRS
information on the question. You can also "Embark on a
cyber-journey with the Tax Prophet, as he deciphers the
Internal Revenue Code for U.S. and foreign taxpayers, and
professionals alike. Watch as he stills the swirling pool of
tax obfuscation with a touch of his magic wand." I definitely
like the style of the site.
If you are having trouble getting through to the IRS site, you
can download forms from Taxing Times, which provides federal
and state forms, plus detailed instructions on how to download
and use them. Net Tax also mirrors federal forms.
Six Ways to Get Audited is interesting reading if you are the
kind of person who likes to know how the IRS chooses victims.
If You Have a Good Idea of What You are Looking For...
Taxes are a popular subject for discussion and web pages. There
are so many good index pages that cover all kinds of tax topics
and perspectives, Here are some that I encountered:
Income Tax Information in Internet
Tax and Accounting Sites - A Directory of Internet
Resources
Cites, Sites, and More Sights
Yahoo's Tax Information Page
Simple, Easy to Follow Suggestions
Tax Tips and Facts
1996 Tax Calendar
25 Most common Tax Errors
Tax Planning Tips
For the Truly Committed Tax Payer
Tax Analysts features 21 moderated mailing lists on various
aspects of taxes. There is an archive of the lists available on
this page as well. They also feature Tax Notes Newswire which
gives you the latest in tax news around the country and the
world.
For very specific needs, you can visit Sec. 501. - Exemption
from tax on corporations, certain trusts, etc. (which is the
tax code which deals with not-for-profits), and if you're an
independent contractor or you run a business that deals with
independent contracting, you'll want to visit An Analysis of
IRS Guidelines for Independent Contractor and Employee Status.
If despite all this extra help, you just can't get it done on
time, at least you can be creative in your excuse to the
government. Visit the EVIL Little Brother Excuse Generator to
help you form the perfect letter to accompany your plea for an
extension. And since this is St. Patrick's day and I'm part
Irish, I leave you with this old Irish blessing:
"May your filings always be quick,
And may they never see fit to audit you"
